Green Energy Study Program

Description

danishknowhow® introduces a study tour program focusing on production of energy from agriculture. During one week's stay in Denmark you will be guided through the whole sector and the newest technologies.

  • Straw Heating
  • Bio gas
  • Bio fuel (1st and 2nd generation)
  • Wind power
  • Energy efficiency on a farm

Background

Energy-savings and environmental concerns have been a focus area for Danish society for many years. Today the results are evident: Denmark is entirely self-sufficient in energy and has achieved economic growth while barely increasing energy consumption. Renewable energy sources are playing an ever more important role and CO2 emissions are dropping.

Production of energy

Denmark is today one of the leading countries in the sector of green energy. More that 20% of the Danish electricity is derived from wind power, and a large amount of windmills are placed on farmland.

More than 60% of the Danish households are supplied from district heating. Straw heating is widely use for district heating all over the country. Today about 1,5 million tons of straw is used for heating.

1,35 million tons of manure is used for biogas and 150 million litres of biodiesel is produced from Danish oil seed rape.

Saving energy

Danish Crown – the largest slaughterhouse company in northern Europe – has halved the energy consumption per slaughtered pig during the last 20 years.

Danish farmers are frontrunners in saving energy by isolation of facilities and intelligent use of heat, electricity and water. For example many farmers have systems for using the heat in the slurry for heating up their houses.

Technology

Denmark is leading in wind power technology. One third of the worlds windmill capacity is supplied from Danish companies.

Technology for production of bio ethanol is on highest level in Denmark. 2nd generation of the technology is ready for full scale production using biomass from straw.

Pilot plants for production of bio fuel oil using refined animal fat extracted from by-products from slaughterhouses and primary agriculture.
